The Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, within the University of Tasmania’s College of Health and Medicine, is at the forefront of translational research of relevance to people with dementia and their carers, and provides a range of innovative educational programs on dementia. The Wicking Centre undertakes multidisciplinary research around three main themes – The Care, Cause and Prevention of Dementia. Educational programs are closely interlinked with the Centre’s research programs, and are offered world-wide.

The Wicking Centre has a global reach, primarily through our Dementia MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) – Understanding Dementia and Preventing Dementia. To date, over 200,000 participants have enrolled in our MOOCs which are helping to build dementia literacy, and drive a revolution of dementia care internationally.

Currently there are approximately 46.8 million people with dementia globally, estimated healthcare costs are around US$818 billion, rising to US$2 trillion in 15 years – dementia is fast becoming the number one public health priority. Our goal, through a global and interdisciplinary approach, is to meet the needs of people with dementia, their family carers, those providing health and social care, and to advance our research programs related to the Care, Prevention and Cause of dementia.

Currently the Wicking Centre is recruiting to expand our MOOC Research team. Positions are available for a Research Fellow, a Research Assistant and two PhD Scholarships to explore aspects of the impact of the MOOCs.
